What To Look Out For In A Mentor?

When I started my career in the life insurance industry over 20 years ago, I knew I wasn’t going to do it alone.⁣

Seeking mentorship was when I actively did so I could fast track my growth and avoid making costly mistakes.⁣ 💯

Today as I build my top agency in my company nurturing the champion leaders and producers of today and tomorrow, I share with them my big 3 criteria for choosing your mentors:⁣

1. Trust Matters⁣ ❤️

Take time to assess and understand someone well first, before you decide to take him or her as my mentor. Of course while you’re doing so, you have to prove why you are worthy to be mentored too.⁣

Trust is the number one thing I will look for as you will be sharing many things be it professional or personal with your mentor.⁣

So you want to be able to feel safe with this person – for you to share your biggest dreams and deepest fears with him or her. ⁣

2. Subject Matter Expertise ⁣💪🏻

It’s never about finding someone older or someone with the biggest title or the longest years of experience. ⁣

More importantly, ask yourself what do you need master to get to your next level of growth. ⁣

Is it mastering relationships, learning about social media or branding, self-management or even singular skills like geomancy or palmistry to add value to your clients? ⁣

This way, then you can find a mentor with the relevant knowledge and expertise to help you on your journey and bring out the best in you. ⁣

3. Embrace Diversity ⁣🤯

Never be afraid to look for a mentor that is different from you.⁣

Sometimes, a bit of friction is great. ⁣

Because you start to be challenged and the differences help to chip away at your old habits and ways of doing. ⁣

Find that someone who can get you to step out of your comfort zone.⁣

Close enough but yet also, different enough. ⁣

Having someone to look at things from an entirely different perspective and viewpoint helps you gain the most clarity. ⁣
